International conference “Community histories, environment and mobile pastoralism in Inner Asia” and Mongolian Cultural Day (April 4–5, 2025)
The Department of Mongolian, Korean and Vietnamese Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, is organizing the international conference
“COMMUNITY HISTORIES, ENVIRONMENT AND MOBILE PASTORALISM IN INNER ASIA: Mobile pastoralism, mobility, local and national identities, and environmental issues viewed through the systematic research of local oral memories and local archives”.
The conference will take place on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th April 2025 in room C34, Building C, Arna Nováka 1. Thirty scholars from France, USA, Hungary, Mongolia and China are expected to actively participate. During the conference, six employees of the organizing institution will also present the latest findings of their projects “Changing Adaptive Strategies of Mobile Pastoralists in Mongolia: Dynamics in Community Histories and Movement Patterns Documented Through Oral Sources” (Czech Science Foundation, GM23-07108M) and “Evolutionary interferences of religion and governance in Inner Asia: Comparison of mutual impacts with tributary countries: Mongolia, Korea, Vietnam” (Czech Science Foundation, GA23-06953S).
The conference will be held in English and Mongolian. The conference is open to the public.
The conference program will be published on the Department of Mongolian, Korean and Vietnamese Studies website.

The conference will be accompanied by the
“Mongolian Cultural Day”,
organized by the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations under the auspices of UNESCO in cooperation with the Department of Mongolian, Korean and Vietnamese Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. The Mongolian Cultural Day will consist of a live presentation of objects and products representing the nomadic culture of Mongolia (depending on the weather, the presenters will be either in the courtyard of the Faculty of Arts complex at Arna Nováka 1 or in the corridor on the ground floor of Building D), an exhibition on the intangible cultural heritage of Mongolia inscribed on the UNESCO list (panels in front of the entrance to Building C), and a public discussion panel focused on the current context of nomadic pastoralism, which will take place on April 4 at 5:00 PM-6:30 PM in room C34.
